The Blog

I love hearing how people find my site and watch my videos.  They often say they were searching for a wedding videographer on Google, or they saw a friend’s wedding film I made and are getting married soon themselves so they looked me up.  Regardless of how they find me, I’ve heard many of them tell me they started watching a random couple’s wedding film and then start to tear up, laugh, and experience the emotion of the day with the couple in the video.  Then someone they know comes into the room and asks why they are having an emotional outburst over a couple they’ve never met.

Candace and Tyler were getting married at the Heights Villa last year, and after searching for wedding films they saw Melissa and Mason’s wedding film I shot there in 2011.  They completely fell in love with the film, and wanted something just like it.  I was happy to oblige, and I made them a film that I think has the same feel as Melissa and Mason’s, but incorporates all the improvements I’ve made as a filmmaker in the past two and a half years.

Okay, I promise the couple that I post after this one isn’t one that I met through Impact Retreat!  But I did meet Joel through Impact, so he just adds to my list of Impact Weddings.

Over my four years of filming weddings, I have seen many Christian ceremonies.  Often, the bride and groom will express to the pastor how they want their wedding ceremony to reflect the gospel of Jesus and express their love for God, as much as their love for one another. As often as I see this though, Bailey and Joel were the first couple to ask me to make their wedding film convey the gospel as well.  They wanted a film that was as much about God as it was about themselves.

Filming a wedding with an explicit gospel message may sound like a difficult task, but these two made it incredibly easy.  From their prayer before the ceremony, to a wonderful message delivered by Butch Smith I was able to capture the essence of the gospel, while showing their love.  It is apparent on Joel’s face when he sees bailey for the first time how excited he is, and I can only imagine that is how Christ views his church when we seek Him.  Their joy and excitement throughout the day mirrors Christ love as well.  Like I said, Bailey and Joel made telling the story of their wedding day and giving a glimpse into the love of God through their wedding film easy.

If you are planning on getting married and want a specific message conveyed through your wedding film, I would be happy to film it.

Special thanks to Ashley Stineman at Sun 7 Studios for helping film.

Spoiler alert: I met Joanna through Impact at Texas A&M, so this is ANOTHER Impact wedding!

When Joanna first told me she wanted a small wedding out in the Texas Hill Country I immediately knew it was going to be amazing. Michael and her met when she was looking for a job, and her brother said he knew a guy in Lubbock that could help her. That guy of course ended up being Michael, and of course she got the job. They hungout a lot in Lubbock, and he soon asked her out on a date.  Three months and a lot of steak dinner dates later, Joanna and Michael’s family met. It was then that Joanna began to realize just how easy everything was.  Their families got along well, they gradually liked each other more, and that grew into love.  They found what they needed in one another.

Three more months passed and they both knew that they would get married, but Michael still had to surprise her with a ring. For his 30th birthday, they both went to Vegas to celebrate. After catching some shows and walking down the strip, they ended up in front of the Bellagio fountain. It was there that Michael told Joanna that he had decided what he wanted for his birthday. He said “I’ve decided to spend the rest of my life with you,” then got down on one knee and proposed.

Spinelli's Hill Country CathedralOne year from when they started dating, Joanna and Michael were married at Spinelli’s Cathedral in Comfort, Texas.  It was quaint, cozy, and matched them perfectly. Two weeks before the wedding, Joanna’s mother emailed me saying that Michael had a surprise planned for the ceremony; he was going to sing his vows to Joanna. True to his word, after Joanna said her vows Michael pulled out his guitar and sang “Cross My Heart” by George Strait as his vows. She loved it, and it was one of the best ceremonies I’ve ever filmed.

This was also the first wedding I’ve ever shot with the Black Magic Cinema Camera.  I shot in 2.5K RAW the whole day, and ended up with over 400 Gigs of footage!  It really is an amazing camera, and while it takes much longer to convert and edit the footage it shoots, the beautiful images it produces is worth it.

Special thanks to Taylor Stanley for helping me film the wedding!

This has been a very busy year for the Kiel family. My friend Emily Kiel, who does all my DVD case design work, and her sister Ellen Kiel both were engaged and married within 5 months of one another.  I filmed Ellen’s wedding in July, and Emily’s wedding in November.  Please don’t ask me to choose a favorite, because they were both a lot of fun to film.

This blog post is all about Ellen and Jeff’s wedding though, so let’s concentrate on them.  They met at their office, when Jeff said hello after overhearing Ellen and a coworker speaking about how Ellen doesn’t like to cook.  Jeff, you see, LOVES to cook and he was looking for a woman who would let him cook for her. They hit it off, started dating, and a bit down the road Jeff was ready to propose. Of course he enlisted Emily to help, by making Ellen think they were having a photo shoot complete with cute signs that they would hold right up until he got down on one knee and proposed.  Incidentally, you can read all about the proposal and see the photoshoot on Emily’s blog.  And if you want even more details, you can read the proposal and Ellen’s own words.

I hope you enjoyed watching Ellen and Jeff’s video, because there’s another Kiel wedding video coming out soon!

Big thanks to Daniel Karr for helping me film this wedding!  We shot it with two Sony FS100s and the footage was beautiful!

Maverick. Marla. Aren’t those the coolest names ever? For real. I like these guys a lot!   Maverick makes videos much like I do, but with a name like that it’s pretty obvious that he specializes in surfing videos or something radical of that nature.  Keeping in mind this is Texas and the only waves we get are two feet high in Corpus Christi, Maverick is limited to filming land surfing, or as the locals call it – skateboarding.

Maverick’s love for film is so great, that their wedding was made completely around that theme.  From a movie slate groom’s cake to the minister that spoke extensively about how their wedding resembled a movie, everything felt like Hollywood.  I guess that made me the paparazzi.  I got to follow them around, film their happiness, and even get ideas for my own wedding.

I feel like you wouldn’t really understand their wedding day without knowing that they are both total goofballs.  Maverick possesses a penchant for theatricality, which is only rivaled by how much Marla encourages it.  For example, when Maverick proposed, he took Marla onto the Baylor campus, set her down on a bench and disappeared around the side of a building.  Five minutes later he emerged, decked out in a children’s plastic suit of armor, riding a REAL white horse to ask her to marry him!  This theatricality is fully visible in their highlight when Maverick states his vows to Marla.

So to sum it up, they are both hilariously goofy, theatrical, film loving people that I love and was very happy to film and hangout with.  I love unique people.
